Bala is an interesting market town with its Norman motte still apparent. It was founded by Roger de Mortimer in the 14th. century and it prospered in the 1700's and early 1800's with the "manufacture" of stockings and gloves.
These were made by hand as a cottage industry. Farming and tourism are now the mainstay of this centre of Welsh Language and Culture. Y Bala translates as the "outflow of the lake".
An excellent leaflet is available describing the many facets of this interesting little town.
