Then, how cool is this! This winter there's lots of snow on Mauna Kea, largest mountain on earth from bottom of sea to top, at over 14,000 ft above sea level, so bring your snowboard!  International Observatories on top, some with tours.

The University of Hawaii Hilo Astronomy Center offers exhibits and shows that could fill an entire day. The Tsunami museum tells all about Hilo, how it was affected by tsunamis and how it was restored to what it is now.

Hike through lava tubes big enough for a bus, check out the steam vents as natural saunas, see ancient petroglyphs, snorkel over colorful live coral reefs, swim with giant sea turtles and schools of tropical fish, see lava pour into the ocean as it creates new land.

There are great mountain bike and hiking trails. Did I mention the Volcano National Park? The visitors center also has a great exhibit of the wildlife and history of Hawaii including a theater with hourly shows of the same.

Then a short drive to the Kileaua gift shop with a cafeteria and restaurant overlooking the huge caldera as steam rises from many spots within, which also can be hiked into and across.

You'll love strolling through historic Hilo Town, as it's the origin of the Hawaiian culture. This quaint, turn of the century town with it's Victorian and plantation style architecture will charm you with it's shops, stores, art studios, and restaurants.

One of the biggest Farmers Markets is there in old town with the best and most diverse selection of produce and flowers from local farmers you can imagine, as well as many artisans and merchants selling their goods in the many booths.

As I mentioned, our warm, clean, cozy garden cottage couldn't be more centrally located from all these activities and sites, this is a great  place for your Hawaiian home base.

Had a great time at Barb and Mike's place!

I stayed here with my boyfriend Shannon and our friend Tod this past August. Barb and Mike were excellent hosts and very welcoming- we even had a little tequila together! The grounds are lovely and you will get a piece of the Big Island experience while staying here. The cottage was great for 3 people- we were very relaxed for the 5 nights we stayed! The loft is pretty cool as well. The outside shower is lovely in the rain. Thanks again for having us Barb and Mike!

It's not your usual vacation rental

We are surrounded by sounds of frogs, birds, and we slept right through it. It is truly a \'true\' Hawaiian experience. The Hilton and Marriott may look great, but that isn\'t something we haven\'t seen before. On the other hand, this place is the rain forest. If you want pampering, afraid of bugs, white sheets replaced every day, army of cooks to cook your food then stay at 4 seasons. But if you are looking for something different, experiencing what it feels like to live within a forest, this is THE place. We went to Peru\'s Amazon and the atmosphere is very similar. Also the location stays within reach of Volcano, sea shore, and the local Poke is just great. We got to see what Hilo is really like with Barbara and Mike. They are the warmest people you will find.

We had a wonderful time!

We had a great time staying at the cottage. Barbara and Michael were wonderful hosts, giving us tips for places to visit. They also invited us to their Christmas potluck dinner!

Real Hawaii, small but comfy, great hosts

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Barbara and Michael are gracious and attentive hosts, the grounds are lovely and peaceful, and the cottage is rustic and comfy. It’s as light as you want it to be with good blinds to filter if you want to take a nap or sleep in. The two substantial ceiling fans keep the place cool during the day. You might not need them at night. The main bed is way more comfortable than my bed at home. I slept like a baby. We didn’t use the loft much for our 3yr old to sleep in, but they provided a futon. The loft is sturdy and perfect for sleeping 4+ yr olds. The outdoor shower is lovely and there is a shower curtain now (I think one of the previous review mentioned there not being one). If you haven’t stayed on the big island before, this area is lush. Expect some dampness in the air. We are more travelers than tourists and prefer to spend the bulk of our stay on this side of the island. Do not book this if you are a fluff-my-pillow kind of tourist. Book this if you have a sense of adventure and desire to see what Hawaii is really like, but also want to sleep in homey comfort as opposed to camping. Enjoy!

Jungle Paradise

Mike and Barbara are great hosts. They were helpful with information and the things we needed. Their place is quiet and private with plenty of vegetation to make you feel you are in the jungle. It was a great change of pace for a few days after being in the hustle and bustle of down town Kona.
