The neighborhood
Villa Viola is within minutes away from Deep Bay and Fort Barrington. You can take a short 10 minutes hike to Fort Barrington which sits on the northern end of the bay. The Fort used to protect the southern approach into St. John's. The fortifications that you see today date back to about 1779. The calm, protected waters and soft sand not only offers great snorkeling, swimming and splashing, but interesting hikes too. You can walk up to the tumultuous waters at the tip of the cape and enjoy the endless blue view of the ocean, especially at sunset.
Although Deep Bay is by no means secluded, it is not particularly popular. It's the perfect choice for guests who want to enjoy a beach with mild activity without getting stuck in the most crowded parts of town. This is also a great beach for snorkeling - a wreck lies in the middle of the bay, the Andes, a barque from Trinidad that sank nearly 100 years ago when its cargo of pitch caught fire. Its mast pokes out of the water at times and you can snorkel round it pretty easily.

Renting a car or signing up for a Historical Land Tour is highly recommended. We will be pleased to make your arrangements for you. Also, should you prefer to use public transportation, a short 20 minutes walk to the Village of Five Island will lead you to the village bus stop.
