Duddon Villa is a large, Victorian, stone-built, villa on the shore of the beautiful Duddon Estuary in the Western Lake District. Recently fully renovated, it provides accommodation to the English Tourist Board’s highest standards of quality and attention to detail for up to ten guests, blending original features and furnishings with modern comfort and amenities. The spacious accommodation includes large reception rooms, games room, contemporary country kitchen, five bedrooms (four en-suite, one four-poster) and a large family bathroom. Outside are large garden areas, ample parking and magnificent coastal and mountain views. Built in 1879, to house the Manager of the Millom Ironworks Pier, this large, white stone Villa stands close to the banks of the quiet Duddon Estuary. Beyond the water the Dunnerdale Fells rise to present a craggy backdrop.
These are the views that surround Duddon Villa and the small cluster of four houses within which it stands. Above the rooftops of Millom town the skyline is dominated by 2000ft Black Combe.
Enter into the grand, panelled hallway, off which the ground floor reception rooms open. Along the length of the villa, on the seaward side is a light and airy lounge room, with a comfortably furnished seating area and TV at one end and formal dining room at the other. High windows stream in light and offer views across the sands. This room, as with the whole house, is decorated with an interesting collection of paintings, objects d’art and antiques. Across the hall, is a large, bright, well-equipped country kitchen, (double electric range, dishwasher, fridge, microwave) at the centre of which sits a comfortable breakfast table. The adjacent utility room contains an automatic washing machine with drier. The wide, sweeping staircase leads past new art-glass windows to a seating area on the first floor landing. Opening off to the seaward side the large games room again runs the length of the building, within which there is a 3/4-size snooker table, dart board, and a lounge area with sofas, TV (with Sky), video, stereo equipment, Wii, PS2 console, a karaoke machine, an electronic games table and a range of board games. Around two sides of the room, large windows present magnificent views across the estuary and of the low fells that ring the coast. Bird and wildlife watchers can take advantage of one of the more unusual pieces within the house, a gun sight from HMS Ajax!
The house comfortably sleeps up to ten guests in large double or twin bedrooms, of which four are fully en-suite and one, double with four-poster, has an adjacent bathroom. All the bedrooms were newly constructed during the renovation of the house, to incorporate high quality modern facilities. Despite this the bedrooms have lost none of their original charm and provide wonderful views across the surrounding landscape. The bedrooms are arranged over two floors, with most being on the second floor. All the beds have duvets and all bed linen is provided. Duddon Villa has its own large garden bordering a nature reserve and is relaxed and natural in keeping with the surroundings. An outside seating area provides space for quiet moments or a chance to cook up a family barbecue on a long, warm summer evening. For the kids there is plenty of room to play and explore safely including the Pirate Ship play area and the mini football field. The beach is just seconds away at the bottom of the garden. We’re currently working to develop more outdoor activities and we’ll bring news of these as they come on-line, check back soon for details!
