The upstairs master bedroom named after Isaac Bayly who built this house in 1875 is opulently decorated in a deep rich claret red. French pleated drapes and tiebacks have been chosen to complement the colour and the duvet and pillows specially made to match. The old brass bedstead stands proud in this room with the queen bed fitted with quality linen and electric blanket. A single bed with a cream marcella bedspread makes this room ideal for guests travelling as a twin. The light fittings are white rose painted china and brass and match the dcor beautifully. An antique washstand with basin and pitcher stand in one corner along with a wooden chest, chairs and coffee table next to the fireplace.
Wonderful views of the woodland garden, swimming pool and petanque piste are found from the private balcony off this bedroom. Enjoy your breakfast here during summer or pass the afternoon away sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the summer evenings.
The private en suite has a white and rose tiled shower, and old fashioned pedestal washbasin and brass towel and toilet fittings. Mauve coloured towels and bathrobes complete this room.
Tairoa Lodge is one of the oldest remaining residences in the Hawera Township, situated on four hectares of land. Built in 1875 by Isaac Bayly (a successful local Butcher), the heart kauri timber in the house was barged down from Northland to New Plymouth and then transported by bullock wagon to Hawera. The original kitchen in the house was the butchery until 1903 when Isaac Bayly sold his very grand home to the Lovell family (local florists). The house remained in the family for 92 years until we purchased it in late 1997. Pat Lovell was born here and spent her child hood living in this house. She then married Jack Blyth and together they brought up their family of four here and developed a very successful florist and horticulture business.
Our intent at purchase was to restore this beautiful Victorian Villa to its original beauty and character and open our home to guests. The major restoration work has included building the verandah, bay window off the sitting room and balcony from the upstairs master bedroom. An original photo showed us that this was the style that Isaac Bayly had built in 1875. Other renovations have included repiling, electrical rewiring and plumbing, replacing scrim with gib board, rejuvenating the original kauri floorboards, resurrecting the existing pool and working on the wonderful established grounds.
