Description
More than a century after it was built in 1912, our summer cottage sits tucked in the woods of Brevard, serving as a place for folks to stop, relax and Rest~A~ Bit.
One might characterize a stay at Rest~A~Bit as “glamping.”
Let me try to describe it…
As you pull into the wooded drive you catch sight of our cedar shake cottage nestled on a heavily wooded lot. Head up the front steps into the screened porch and the magic of Rest~A~Bit puts you under its spell. Three pairs of handmade french doors open from the three bedrooms onto the front porch, giving the cottage a spacious, indoor/outdoor feel. Walk through the cottage and you will notice little has been done to update the cabin: the aged rough sawn hemlock framing is exposed throughout the cabin, the handmade swinging windows with the old wavy glass still open to usher in the mountain air and the built-in benches still provide seating at the original dining room table. In a nod to comfort and convenience, you will find a few modern touches: central heat and air; flat screen HD cable TV and wireless internet; the addition of a second bathroom; and a kitchen with all the modern conveniences (gas range, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and washer/dryer) teamed with salvaged items (pressed-tin ceiling; barn wood siding, enameled light fixtures, enamel farm sink, etc.) so as to preserve the rustic feel. At the back of the cottage is a second screen patio with the original picnic table and benches where you can eat outside, protected from the weather and pests. Finally, just outside the rear porch is an open-air patio with a large firepit for those essential campfires. I think it is like being in a really solid tent.
While Rest~A~Bit is a vacation experience in and of itself, you might be inclined to explore further than our cool little cottage in the woods. There is plenty to do and see just beyond the cottage! Rest~A~Bit is conveniently located so you can leave the car and walk to a concert at the famed Brevard Music Center (.6 mile), or walk a tad further (.75 miles) to the center of downtown Brevard to explore shops, the local farmers market, art galleries, coffee shops, soda fountain, restaurants, movie theatre, or our historic courthouse and Silvermont mansion. Do you want to get off on your own? It’s a short walk/ride (1.1 miles) from the cottage to the paved, dedicated hike & bike path that takes you from Brevard into Pisgah National Forest where you can hike and bike for hours or days on end!
If our cottage sounds like it would suit you, we invite to get in touch with us to arrange some time to savor the experience of Rest~A~Bit.
